At Robert Adair Jewellers in Ballymena we know that there are few things more mesmerising than watching your diamond ring sparkle. A beautiful diamond should shine and dance in the light, so it’s only natural to want to maintain that bling by giving your ring regular cleanings.
Jewellery Cleaning advice from Robert Adair Jewellers Ballymena
First, determine what kind of dirt and grime has got onto your ring, says Stuart. “If you’re very active outdoors or in the kitchen and there’s a hard compacted layer of oil or dirt, it’s best to get it cleaned at a jewellers using professional products that will restore the brilliance of the stone and setting safely.”
However, if your ring has been dirtied by common cosmetics — for example, hairspray, lotion, makeup, or perfume — a simple at-home cleaning should be sufficient.
“The best way to clean your ring is to make a solution with warm water (almost hot) and dishwashing soap. Soak your ring for about 20 to 40 minutes, gently brush the stone with a very soft toothbrush, and then, after placing the plug in the sink (just in case), rinse under warm running water. If needed, repeat.”
What to avoid using:-
As for substances that you should never use to clean your ring, stay away from any household cleaners such as bleach, chlorine, and acetone, advises Stuart. “These harsh chemicals can break down some of the base metals in your ring. Also never use any kind of abrasive products such as toothpaste, baking soda, or any powdered cleaners, which can easily scratch the precious metal of the band and setting.”
Lastly, also avoid at-home ultrasonic jewellery cleaning machines, especially if your ring features pave set stones says Stuart. “If one of the claws is weakened or if there’s the slightest error in workmanship, the vibrations from an ultrasonic machine can dislodge a stone,” he warns. “Your safest bet for ultrasonic cleaning is to take it to a jeweller, where professionals can test the security of the settings first — or fix it should anything come loose.”

Robert Adair Jewellers in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, love Secrid Mens Wallets. Secrid Mens Wallets are designed and made in Holland. They were designed by married couple Rene and Marianne who noticed that traditional wallets were unable to cope with the increasing number of credit cards and store card which we all now use. Secrid wanted to design something which was safe, durable, easy to use and beautiful – and we think they managed it!
Secrid Mens Wallets – Northern Ireland
They wanted to produce a stylish product which would house all their cards and protect them from being scanned against your will. Here is how Secrid explain their product:
Plastic cards have a hard time, they get bent and become brittle in your pocket. In particular, RFID/NFC cards are not safely stored in a regular wallet. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) or NFC (Near Field Communication) cards have a chip and an antenna for wireless communication. These cards, such as the public transportation pass, new credit cards and admission tickets, can be activated, selected and copied from up to many metres away, without you noticing. The Secrid Cardprotector works as a firewall in your wallet.
A Secrid wallet allows you to carry around your cards safely and in style. Just take a look at this video below which show you why this wallet is so good.
The Secrid Mens Wallet is brilliant because it allows you to see all of your card in one swift movement. The aluminium case protects against any digital pickpockets and you can chose from the sleek metal wallet or add a stylish leather cover. Find out more about Secrid Wallets here.
If you would like to find out more about the Secrid Wallet then please call in at Robert Adair Jewellers in Northern Ireland. The professional staff can help you to chose the wallet which is perfect for you and show you the range of wallets they carry.
Robert Adair jewellers are based in Ballymena in Northern Ireland and they sell beautiful jewellery, watches and gifts including the Secrid Mens Wallet.
At Robert Adair Jewellers, Ballymena we like to remind customers that they may be wearing their wedding ring for the rest of their life so, it’s important to choose a design they are comfortable with. We recommend that you consider a variety of metals, shapes, thicknesses and styles when choosing the perfect wedding ring.
Which metal when choosing the perfect wedding ring?
The choice of metal for the bride’s wedding band is usually dictated by her engagement ring. The groom’s ring will often follow suit too. However, if the bride and groom have different preferences there is nothing to stop the groom opting for gold while the bride goes for platinum. In any case, here are the most popular options:
A yellow gold wedding ring is the traditional choice. 24ct is the purest form of gold but also the softest variety so is not generally recommended for wedding bands. Our most popular choice for a gold band is18ct which gives a nice compromise between purity and durability.
White gold will complement any silver or platinum jewellery you may have already, and is currently a very popular choice. Most of our white gold bands have a high palladium content which means that even after substantial wear and tear the ring will still maintain its nice bright and white colour.
A platinum wedding ring is another popular choice.A naturally white metal platinum is extremely durable and is the ideal metal to securely hold diamonds and precious gemstones.Whilst initial costs of a platinum ring are higher than for example gold, a ring made in this material will last a lifetime with very little maintenance apart from an occasional polish to bring back the luster of the metal.
Palladium wedding rings are now a very popular choice particularly with the men. From the same family of metals as platinum, palladium offers many of the advantages of platinum but with a lower price tag.It is extremely durable and available in many different finishes shapes and styles- both modern and traditional. We are occasionally asked if we sell titanium wedding rings- with a resounding no as the answer.Titanium is not a precious metal and cannot be adjusted in size or repaired once damaged- not good attributes for a ring which is expected to last a lifetime.
We recently offered some advice on shape when choosing the perfect wedding ring – click here to read.
Style of band when choosing the perfect wedding ring?
You will probably never have considered this before but if you turn a ring on its side you will notice the style – or profile – of its band. The most common band shapes for wedding rings are:
Rounded-edge wedding ring: this gently curved style is the most subtle and traditional option.
High-domed wedding ring: with its more pronounced curve, this style is slightly taller than the rounded-edge design and can suit higher set engagement rings
Flat wedding ring: this design has quite square edges for a more modern look.
Other terms you might hear when it comes to wedding-band shapes include D-shape wedding ring, court wedding ring or concave wedding ring. Don’t be unnerved by all this terminology, just call in to the shop where we will be able to show you all the options and advise on what shape best suits the shank (band) of your engagement ring.
Other factors when choosing the perfect wedding ring?
Diamond set wedding rings are very much in vogue at the moment but it is important to choose a ring where the diamonds are set down low into the band. There are two secure styles to choose from, either channel set or rub over set both are secure and will allow many years of wear.We are sometimes asked for settings with the diamonds all the way around the band, this gives a lovely effect but it must be remembered that it does make any sizing adjustments in the future difficult if possible at all.We have a superb range of diamond set wedding rings in all precious metals not only for the ladies but also for the man who wants a bit of sparkle as well.
Couples often want to have their wedding date or a special message engraved on the inside of their wedding rings. This isn’t a problem and with our modern computer engraving machine.Engraving can be carried out in any font and style and even on two or more lines. This is part of a free service and puts the finishing touches to the perfect wedding ring.
And finally give yourself plenty of time to choose your rings. While we can have rings ordered and in stock within two weeks it is obviously much better not to be rushed and to take the necessary time to pick a lovely ring that you are going to cherish and wear every day for many years to come.We find that about two to three months prior to the big day is about right for choosing the rings. Some Brides to be are very efficient in their planning and are maybe hoping to have their bands sorted up to a year in advance. While this is fine with us we always prefer not to finalize the sizes etc until nearer the wedding date to allow for loosing (or dare I say putting on ) a little weight.

Choosing the perfect wedding ring. Here is some expert advice from Stuart Adair of Robert Adair Jewellers in Northern Ireland.
Choosing a wedding ring might seem a more straightforward task, but it still involves many exciting decisions and is an important investment. You will be wearing your wedding ring for the rest of your life so it’s important to choose a design you’ll be comfortable with. One of things which you will have to consider is which shape of wedding ring is best.
When it comes to the shape of the bride-to-be’s wedding band, the main consideration is how it sits with her engagement ring.
If the engagement ring is straight-edged, a classic, straight-edged wedding band will sit snugly next to it. However, the gemstone setting in some engagement rings will not accommodate a straight-edged wedding band. In this case I would advise a curved wedding ring, sometimes known as a fitted or shaped ring.
We have a wide selection of shaped wedding rings in stock but if nothing is found to be suitable we can have a ring specially designed to sit perfectly with the engagement ring. This option takes about three to four weeks to complete but we can normally have a CAD drawing completed of the design in about one week.
A great example is this stunning wedding ring. Robert Adair Jewellers helped the couple to design this ring so that the Bride to be’s engagement ring would fit snugly beside it. The beautiful design was manufactured and the couple were delighted with their perfect and unique wedding ring. It is one of a kind and a piece of jewellery which will be treasured forever.
As well as designing and creating a ring to match the engagement ring, we can also utilise an old family wedding ring which can be melted down and reformed as part of the new design either as a completely new ring or as an addition to the new ring. This is a beautiful sentiment which means that a family heirloom can be re-imaged and integrated into something new and special.
Choosing your Wedding ring with Robert Adair Jewellers means that you have a wide choice, expert advice and the opportunity to design a piece which will be unique and made to measure for your needs.

At Robert Adair Jewellers we have provided this Ring Strap sizer to make it as easy as possible for you to find out your ring size. We all know our shoes size and what size fits us best for our clothes so why settle for a ring which is ill fitting. Also as life changes your size may change too.
Click here to download the Ring Strap Sizer which you can then print off and use. This handy guide allows you to check your own ring size quickly and easily. If you are planning a surprise engagement then you may have to guess your partners ring size. We suggest that you find a ring which they wear on their middle finger and try it on your fingers. Check the ring size of whatever finger it fits on best and then we can help you to work out a slightly smaller size which should match your partners ring finger.
Remember the the team at Robert Adair Jewellers are here to help you and that the Ring Strap Sizer should only be used as a guide.
